Parents today should be aware of the importance of practicing good oral hygiene long before their child's first dental visit. Practicing and learning prevention will make a child's first dental visit a positive experience. Sometimes with young children it's helpful to schedule their first visit with a family member, adult or sibling. By watching others, younger children, listen and ask questions and become familiar with the office staff. Frequent topics covered during dental visits are brushing, flossing, dental plaque, fluoride treatments, sealants, and dental caries(cavities).

Primary or "baby teeth" can erupt as early as 4 to 6 months old.
Even at this age cleaning the baby teeth with a washcloth or small toothbrush is a good way to start teaching oral hygiene.
Baby bottle syndrome occurs by allowing strong concentrations of sugar to saturate the teeth. This can be prevented by not putting milk, juice or juice concentrate in the baby's bottle at bed time. Also, by brushing after sugary treats or juices, cavities can be avoided.
Dental caries or cavities are caused when sugar is not promptly removed from the teeth allowing decay to actively breakdown the enamel or hard surface of the tooth. Dental plaque also contributes to decay and needs to be removed by brushing.
Fluoride is a substance used in dental offices for children up to 16 years old to help strengthen the enamel on the teeth. Fluoride can also be found in toothpastes and some over the counter rinces such as ACT.
Sealants are a protective and preventive treatment placed when adult teeth erupt into a child's mouth. These aid in stopping decay on chewing areas of the teeth.

Due to the availability of preventive services both in office and at home, we are able to treat many dental problems in young patients offering a much longer time with their healthy, natural dentition.
