Kids First Dental Visit
This is what the dentist's office might
look like on the inside.
The first time you go to the
dentist office you get to learn about all the things they use to clean and check
your teeth.
Then you get to go in and set in a nice
chair like the one in the picture above. The chair goes up, down and lays back
too, just like a recliner your dad might
have at home. It's really fun to ride in it too.
Then they put a
napkin on you so that they don't get toothpaste on your clothes. It's sort
of like a big kid bib. Mom and dad wear one too when they go to the dentist, so
don't worry, everyone has to put on one.
Then they lay the big chair back. The chair might make a squeaky sound when
it goes back.
Then they turn the light on and shine it on your teeth so they can
see them better.
That's when you know you need to open real wide like a hippopotamus.
Sometimes they give
you sunglasses if the light is too bright and bothers your eyes.
Next, they
check your teeth for cavities. Cavities are the holes that get in our teeth from
not brushing all the plaque bugs off. The dentist or dental hygienist will
write down if he or she sees anything that need to be taken care of. We hope you
don't have cavities.
We also check to see if your gums look good and how
your teeth are coming in.
Then they check to see how good you are brushing your
teeth with special tools that look like little spoons. Sometimes this makes a
funny scratchy sound.
After they do that they polish your teeth with good
tasting toothpaste. They have different flavors like, bubble gum, orange,
grape, and cherry. Yummy!!!
They have real neat stuff too, like
a squirt
gun that never runs out of water and it also blows air too. They use
this to rinse the toothpaste off your teeth.
They also have a tiny little
vacuum cleaner. Sometimes they call it "Mr. Thirsty" because he drinks
all the water out of your mouth that they squirt. It's feels really funny and
tickles when they use Mr. Thirsty.
Then when they are done polishing your
teeth they give your teeth a fluoride bath. This makes your teeth strong
so the cavity bugs can't get them so easily.
Sometimes they take special pictures of your
teeth called X-rays. X-rays help the dentists or dental hygienist look for
cavities and if your teeth are coming in correctly. X-rays are a very
important tool for the dentist or dental hygienist to use. They help us
know what needs to be done to a tooth or if your teeth are coming in properly.
We hope you have fun at your
first visit to the dental office and you come back every 6 months to have your
teeth checked, polished and a fluoride bath.
